Introduction

ANES - Associação Nacional de Esterilização, the Portuguese National Association for Sterilization was established in 1997 with the following objectives:

• To promote good practice for the prevention and control of infection transmission through the centralization of Sterilization Services.
• To disseminate European and International Standards related to the correct use and re-use of medical devices produced for multiple use.
• To collaborate with the Ministry of Health in developing national guidelines.
• To promote education of professionals working in Sterilization services in all Health Care Institutions.

ANES has 200 members mostly nurses but also including a few doctors, hospital administrators and pharmacists. Amongst its activities is the annual organization of a National Conference.
